Review: The Jazz Breakfast

The Tomorrow’s Warriors alumnus and former member of the Abram Wilson band has developed a clear and concise idea of what he wants to do with his piano playing, his compositions and this trio, which has Max Luthert on bass and Moses Boyd on drums. The eight tracks are all composed by Edwards, and range from the Brazilian feel of the opener Samba City to the straight-ahead, heads down approach of The Runaround, despite its nursery rhyme-type theme. For the title track Edwards switches from concert grand to electric piano and settles into a retro-groove accented by Boyd’s shuffling drums. 'This is the second album by Trinity Laban graduate and 2014 MOBO Awards nominee Peter Edwards, his first being 2014's Safe And Sound. Edwards was a member of a group led by the late trumpeter Abram Wilson and is currently a member of vocalist Zara McFarlane's band. Opening with an infectious Latin beat, "Samba City" recalls the foot- tapping imperative of Chick Corea's Return To Forever era. A calmer mood ensues with "Loved Ones" recalling the blues-infused, chordal-rich piano of Joe Zawinul during his time with the Julian "Cannonball" Adderley Quintet....' Since graduating from Trinity Conservatoire in London in 2009, Peter Edwards has been racking up the awards. He was nominated in the MOBO Awards for 'Best Newcomer' and then picked up the Jazz FM Award for 'Breakthrough Act' in 2015 along with the Parliamentary Jazz 'Newcomer' Award. Drummer Moses Boyd has echoed that in 2016 picking up the same two awards in his duo with saxophonist Binker Golding. Max Luthert, the third member of the trio, is much sought after for his work as a bass player.
